502.5 lb Front Squat & 405 lbs for 22 reps

This is the first time I have ever Front Squatted over 500 lbs so I am very happy with this accomplishment.  My late friend, Jesse Marunde, always told me that there is no doubt that I could do this.  Jesse, this was for you bro.
I did the 405 lbs for 22 reps three minutes after doing the Front Squat for a cooldown set.  I think I am capable of doing at least 30 reps with fresh legs.  That is my goal for March.

Mahalo to the boys at Big Gym in Hood River, Oregon.  They were on hand to support me with spotting and encouragement.  If any of you want to get a good workout while in Hood River, Oregon stop by their gym.  I workout their everytime I visit my in-laws.

Now its time to train for THE CAGE at "The Arnold Classic".  I am going to be part of a tag team 405 lbs squat for the most reps.  IT JUST GOT REAL, and I am going to bring some intensity to Columbus, Ohio on March 5-7th.

Solomon Ortiz advances in Volcom Pipeline Pro

Surfers live for days like today in Hawaii, and over 150,000 online internet spectators live to watch them. Images of Oahu's famous North Shore and thrilling Pipeline surf were webcast in high-definition around the world today and the Volcom Pipeline Pro became one of the Association of Surfing Professional's (ASP) most successful surfing events, overnight.

Surfers like Jamie O'Brien (Hawaii), Rob Machado (CA), Solomon Ortiz(Hawaii), and Reef McIntosh (Hawaii) spend years putting in their time for days like this when the famous, hollow tubes of Banzai Pipeline are firing. For Volcom, sponsors of this event, it was a magical foray into the world of professional surfing. Wave face heights of over 20 feet marched in at daybreak and continued to reel off with machine-like consistency throughout the day, offering the full experience from perfect 10-point tube rides to injuries and shattered surfboards. What better stage to launch surfing's first complete, top-to-bottom high-definition webcast experience?

A $120,000 5-star event of the ASP World Qualifying Series, the Volcom Pipeline Pro is open to the world's best surfers. But more often than not, it's the locals and legends of Pipe who emerge as the stars of the show.

The Volcom Pipeline Pro will continue over two more days between now and the end of its holding period: February 5. Each day of competition will be broadcast live on the internet at Volcom.com/pipelinepro. In Hawaii, watch live on Oceanic Time Warner Cable channel 250 and 1250.

For exclusive Volcom Pipeline Pro video, photos and more, go to Transworldsurf.com.To check out the forecast for Pipeline tomorrow, go to Surfline.com.

This is Volcom's first ever ASP event and is a critical component of the 2010 ASP Hawaii season, offering valuable points towards World Tour qualification, as well as wildcard berths into the December Pipeline Masters.

FUEL TV will air a 30-minute wrap up show in America, Australia and Portugal at the conclusion of the event.

Check out Solomon's profile here http://www.volcom.com/flash/pipepro/warriors/soloman_ortiz.html

Solomon will surf tomorrow in the round of 32.

RESULTS:
Round of 64 1st & 2nd advance. Listed in order of 1st through 4th;
Ian Walsh; Solomon Ortiz; Hank Gaskell; Cory Lopez

Round of 96 1st & 2nd advance. Listed in order of 1st through 4th;

Front squats AGAIN! (what am I, CRAZY?)

Had a stupid idea to do more heavy Front Squats tonight.
I really did do 475 lbs, which is a PR for me but my camera girl Aly didn't record it till after I was done.

"Sure Grant...whatever."
I promise you, 500 lbs is going down next week!

8 minutes of pain Medley

Yesterday was Zack's 22nd birthday. So, we decided to take part in a special "puker" Medley to celebrate.
Seems like my workout crew and I like to do sick stuff like this when one of our birthdays comes up.
  1. 694 lb Tire Flip for 22 meters
  2. Sled Drag with a keg & person for 22 meters
  3. Farmers Walk 234 lbs in each hand for 44 meters (1.5" diameter handles)

BRUTAL. My legs were jello after the Sled Drag, so it sucked picking up the Farmers Walks cause it was tough to stand up with the cylinders. I felt like I was walking through a swamp and like I weighed 1,000 lbs. As you can see, it took 2 videos to film cause it took me forever to recover to finally finish the Farmers Walk.

Raw Powerlifting contest results (Lynwood, WA)

I competed today up in Lynwood, Washington.
Weighed in at 311 lbs

Squat: 285 kilos (628 lbs)
Bench: 187.5 kilos (413 lbs)
Deadlift: 265 kilos (584 lbs)
Total: 1625 lbs

Pretty happy with my last squat. I think I could have done at least 10 lbs more on the 3rd attempt.
Bench press was never my best lift, and I don't train it in Strongman cause we do everything overhead. I might have had another 10 lbs in me though.
Deadlift was terrible. I had a cortisone shot in my L5 last August, so my back strength is weak pulling a bar off the floor. I had a herniated disk and narrowing of the channels. This also affected my squatting, but my squats were on point today!
Need to build my deadlifts up to more than 600 lbs, so I this will be a main focus.

Overall, I went 9 for 9 and on paper broke the Raw records for WA state in my class, except for the Bench Press (435 lbs).
Maybe, I will compete in a Raw USAPL meet this year in WA to officially break those state records.

Thanks!

Seattle Seahawks home finale

It was the Seahawks last game of the '09 NFL regular season, and my friend Brian invited me to go to the game with him.

The Seahawks lost 17-14 to the Tennesse Titans, but I am saving my ticket stub. Titan's running back Chris Johnson, became only the 6th man in NFL history to run for over 2,000 yards in a season. For only his 2nd season in the NFL, thats pretty awesome!

Too bad it was at the Hawks expense!
